Anna’s story
Mentee
Anna’s story
Why did you choose to take part in 1MM's mentoring programme?
I was nervous about starting my career after I came out of University. I didn’t have too much experience. Before mentoring, I was new to everything. I was settling into my new job and adjusting to how things are done. I needed help with my confidence and how to make decisions as I tried to navigate the world of work for the first time.
What has been the best thing about having a mentor?
They have more experience than you. It is a good source of information really. They are humans. They understand. You can’t just search it on the internet. It is really good help, if you are wanting to change paths or do something different. It is a good way to ask for advice.
What has mentoring taught you?
At school I was so quiet and low in confidence. The two main things I have learnt is to have more self confidence and how to deal with I have never been in before. I was working in an office for the first time and mentoring taught me the best time to use my voice in the right way and not step on toes. Sometimes it is ok to voice your opinion to say things could be done differently. I have also learnt to just take any opportunity that comes to me. I want to go up in the career ladder, so for me it is important to take opportunities to progress upwards.
Anna’s message to other young people...
It is a great way to make a relationship and get viewpoints from people you don’t know. I would always recommend a mentor.
