What mentoring does

Support for Young People

There are times in every young person’s life when their feelings about who they are, and what their future will be, can be particularly intense:

  • Thinking about exams and what they want to do post-16
  • Trying to decide ‘what next’ post-18
  • Starting a new FE/HE course or a full-time job for the first time
  • Wondering if the course or career field/role they’ve chosen is right for them
  • Finding it hard to deal with a particular situation or the inevitable knock-backs that life throws at us

At times like this, every young person should be able to benefit from encouragement and practical support from others so they can:

  • Feel less overwhelmed and find it easier to think ahead
  • Be reminded of who they are, what they’re good at, and where they fit best
  • Focus on their own positives instead of worrying about how they compare to others
1MM Mentoring Support

1MM mentoring offers a complement to the curriculum/programme-based learning and professional advice you offer, providing young people with one-to-one, longer-term access to more personalised support from an independent adult who can help them with:

  • Increasing their self-confidence and resilience… aiming high and staying positive
  • Improving their essential skills… communication, leadership, organisation, problem solving, teamwork and time management
  • Exploring their options, making decisions about which way they want to go and finding the right route for them
  • Goal setting and personal development & wellbeing planning as they approach key events e.g. exams, leaving school
  • Scoping out work experience and volunteering opportunities within their local community
  • Practical guidance and support with finding the right course and/or job searching, increasing their networks and connections, applications, CVs & cover letters, interview practice, personal statements...
